Is it just me, or have you noticed all the posts on social media encouraging you to “enjoy the journey”, “live in the moment”, and “trust the process” yada, yada, etc., etc? At first glance my analytical mind reads wa wa wa, it’s all just a little too touchy feely for me. But, then on second glance and giving it some deeper thought this is actually the only way to achieve your goals and make it through the part where you do all the work. The biggest lesson I’ve learned in “enjoying the journey” is to look for things I really enjoy, and build my meals and workouts to include those things.
It’s so simple. Once you’ve identified those things you actually like on this fitness journey, then add them, something enjoyable, even satisfying to every workout and every meal.

This buffalo chicken salad, inspired by the Primal Cravings cookbook is a perfect example. The chicken and mayo are so satisfying, and keep me from getting hungry. The tangy buffalo hot sauce is mouthwatering and so delicious. So, taking my own advice I’ve been eating this salad for lunch a few times a week because it is that darn good. Sure, I’ll probably move onto something else, but for now this is keeping me totally happy.
Go ahead and steal my lunch! For the chicken I’ve been using either my Simple Skillet Chicken or rotisserie chicken from the store. And while you’re at it, make a list of healthy foods that are enjoyable and satisfying to you, and add those into your meals. Then make a list of things you enjoy during your workouts. Maybe it’s a certain lift, or song, or speed on your bike, section of road to run on. Add that to your workout routine this week. Let’s actually enjoy the process and build in a few fun things throughout the week so we’re looking forward to doing all this stuff.
What’s on your list?
- 4 oz chicken
- 1 Tbsp red onion, finely chopped
- 1-2 stalks celery, finely chopped
- 1 Tbsp mayonnaise
- Salad mix
- ½ Tbsp Buffalo Hot Sauce
- Mix the chicken, red onion, celery and mayonnaise together. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Layer the chicken on top of the salad mix, and drizzle with buffalo hot sauce. Enjoy!
